Wilhelm William Charles Pitcher

A collection of 11 original watercolours by Wilhelm ( William Charles Pitcher 1858-1925 ) will be of interest to collectors of late Victorian theatrical design and art. These 11 watercolours are all dated from 1881, 1882 and 1883  and are from the Opera Comique. They are noted on the reverse with various character names and styles. The Wilhelm watercolours will be up for sale on the 23rd April Antiques & Collectors auction.

Born William Charles Pitcher in England, 1858, Wilhelm was one of the most prolific stage designers of his day. He worked on nearly 200 productions including pantomimes, musical comedy, Shakespeare, burlesques, ballets, light opera and plays, and raised the standards of design in popular theatre. His designs showed the realistic style at its best, as heightened reality not unimaginative depiction. His favourite subjects however were those that needed a poetic interpretation, especially historical and fantastical, and he lamented that the public preferred realism! Text from Victoria and Albert Museum for full article click here.
