A 5ft by 8ft painting commissioned for the British Legion by the son of a German Jew who fled Nazi Germany and was helped by the British Legion joins a number of fine paintings and prints in Unique Auctions Wednesday 5th June Fine Antiques & Collectors sale.
The inspiration for the piece included the Joan Baez song Where Have All the Young Men Gone, and the study of poppies in the historical and allegorical representation of flora. The significance of public awareness linking poppies and war
The haunting imagery of 13 soldiers crossing over from life to death (becoming poppies) overlapping bombed buildings and debris, hands holding weapons, are just hinted at and need some time spent looking for, before they emerge, with the falling poppies completing the scene.
