About Dorothy Lee Roberts
Australian born Dorothy Lee Roberts has lived, studied and worked in England form many years. A woman of exceptional talent she follows the parallel careers of artist and concert pianist.
Her natural ability as a painter was apparent from an early age but as an exceptionally talented grand pupil of Clara Schumann, she decided upon a musical career. However, in spite of great success as a concert pianist, she found it impossible to turn her back completely on the world of art; therefor she gathered around her a group of students who met for bi-monthly painting sessions at St Johns Wood. These were seminal years of her evolution as an artist.
During the seventies and the eighties various factors caused her to jettison a successful musical career and return to painting. It was during this period of unselfconscious experimentation that Ferdinand Eckhardt, then Director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, became fascinated by her work. Eckhardt, a friend of Chagall and many German Expressionist painters, convinced her of her gift for abstract form and her exciting use of colour. Thus inspired she decided to embark upon a further career as an artist.
The vigour and passion of her painting demonstrates a marriage between music and art. Thus the rhythm of the activity of painting becomes a natural extension of her music and we are aware of her exciting ability to translate auditory experiences into visual ones.
The current retrospective includes works from the St Johns Wood period t the present day.
Dorothy Lee Roberts paintings are to be found in distinguished private collection throughout Europe, Japan and the Americas. She was a prize-winner in Art ’95 New York International.
