Biography
Mary Beresford Williams (b.1931) was born in London in 1931 and went on to study, firstly, at Watford Grammar School for Girls (1939-1949) obtaining A levels in Art, French and Geography. She then acquired a place at the University Of Reading (1949-1954) where she obtained a B.A. Honours degree in Fine Art Class 1 Drawing & Painting.
Mary is listed within the Cornish Artist’s index, as well as Artprice, and has been a member of the Newlyn Society of Artist’s (N.S.A.) since at least 1978 according to their records. Mary has also been involved in several book publications including illustrating Hurrah for Hazeldown in 1983 and a portrait of TSW (Television South West) which was a limited edition book of her photographic work circa 1980. During preparation for the Hardie-edited volume Artists in Newlyn and West Cornwall (2009), Mary kindly donated her own collection of exhibition catalogues, cuttings and launch invitations to the West Cornwall Arts Archive (W.C.A.A.)
Mary exhibited many times including Royal Albert Museum Exeter (solo 1974), Top Ten (1978), South West Arts Major Award in Fine Art, Newlyn Art Gallery (N.A.G.) in Pont Aven (1977), Mixed Shows, Art Share (1988). She also exhibited in France during the 1970s/80s with the N.S.A.
It is also noted that Mary travelled extensively by yacht throughout The Bahamas and South America.
As well as painting, Mary’s other artistic skills include photography and print making. She uses her photography as part of the process for producing her digital prints in small editions. This method of production means that each print is individually produced by Mary and calls for her artistic judgement at every stage and, therefore, unique. Her screen prints, which she perfected and produced for over 20 years, have an almost photo transparent appearance. This is typical of her unique style and was produced in small limited editions.
Mary is currently believed to be living in a retirement home within the Devon area.
